Kolkata case: A special Poxo court in Kolkata on Tuesday sentenced a person convicted of rape and attempt to murder a seven -month -old girl. The Poxo court in Bankshal on Monday convicted the accused within 75 days of arrest in the case of kidnapping, rape and attempt to murder a girl from Bartola area of the city. He was then sentenced on Tuesday.
After the final hearing of the defense counsel and government prosecutor, the court described it as a rare case. Justice Indraila Mukherjee convicted the accused Rajiv Ghosh under Section 65 (2), 140 (4), 137 (2) and 118 of the Indian Penal Code and Section 6 of the Poxo Act. The maximum punishment for the guilty under the first and final sections of both acts is death penalty.
Rajiv Ghosh, who committed the crime on November 30 last year, was arrested from his house in Gopiballavpur area of Jhargram district on the morning of 5 December. He was trying to escape from there.
The police filed the first charge sheet in this case on 30 December. A few days later a supplementary charge sheet was filed. Special Public Prosecutor Bibhas Chatterjee said that the victim is still in the hospital.
He was treated by RG of Kolkata. Tax is running in medical college and hospital. It took only 40 days to complete the hearing process started on 7 January.
Significantly, in the last six months, this is the seventh death sentence heard by the courts of West Bengal. This is the sixth death sentence given under the POCSO Act for rape of a minor. The victim has expressed satisfaction over the death sentence of the court.
It is noteworthy that the case of rape and murder of a female doctor in RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata was in the news. The CBI filed a charge sheet in the case after investigation. Sanjay Roy, a citizen of Kolkata Police, has been accused in this case. The Sealdah court then found him guilty and sentenced him to life imprisonment. However, the victim has demanded death penalty.
