Mumbai’s traffic violations soar with ₹369 crore in unpaid fines, despite ₹526 crore imposed | Representative photo

Mumbai: Over the past 13 months, Mumbai has recorded a staggering 65.12 lakh traffic violations, resulting in fines worth Rs 526 crore. However, an RTI inquiry has revealed that only Rs 157 crore has been collected so far, leaving a massive Rs 369 crore still unpaid.

The data, obtained by RTI activist Anil Galgali from the Mumbai Traffic Police, highlights a significant backlog in fine payments. Out of 65.12 lakh violators booked between January 1, 2024, and February 5, 2025, only 20.99 lakh vehicle owners have cleared their dues. The remaining 44.13 lakh offenders have yet to pay their fines.

Traffic Violations Across 41 Divisions

The Mumbai Traffic Police, operating across 41 divisions and a multimedia department, have taken action against offenders under 26 different categories of traffic violations. Among them, 47 vehicle owners were fined for using unauthorized flicker and amber lights, amounting to Rs 23,500. However, only seven violators have paid Rs 3,500 so far.

Marine Drive traffic police recorded the highest number of violations, with 32 vehicles penalized, yet only two owners have paid Rs 1,000 in fines.

However, Rs 369 crore is still pending. The issue raises concerns about the effectiveness of fine collection and the need for stricter enforcement mechanisms to ensure compliance with traffic rules.

Anil Galgali commended the Mumbai Traffic Police for their efforts but pointed out a shortage of officers and staff, which has hampered effective enforcement. He suggested that a special recovery drive be launched to collect pending fines.

“Issuing digital notices to defaulting vehicle owners and implementing stricter measures, including vehicle seizure for major defaulters, could help recover the outstanding dues,” Galgali stated.
