A major leak was detected in a 600-mm diameter main water pipeline at Lucky Junction in Bandra West on Tuesday. The BMC’s maintenance department promptly initiated repair work on a war footing to contain the water loss. However, thousands of litres of water were lost into the drain due to the leakage, causing a disruption in the water supply to Bandra West. Civic officials have assured that the repair work will be completed within the day, and the water supply will be fully restored by Wednesday.
According to information provided by the BMC, the leak was detected in the water main on Swami Vivekanand Road at approximately 2 am. This pipeline supplies water to the Pali Hill reservoir, and the leakage has led to disruption in the water supply to nearby areas. A team from the BMC’s maintenance department in Vile Parle was immediately alerted and rushed to the site to carry out the repair work.

“Upon inspection, we identified a leak at the bottom of the pipeline. To stop the leakage, internal welding needs to be done. Since the repair cannot be carried out from the outside, it is necessary to cut the pipe from the top and create a window to access the interior of the pipeline for repairs. This process requires emptying the pipeline,”said Donald Dcunha, sub-engineer, maintenance department.
The civic team had also carried out leak repairs on a pipeline near Bandra Police Station the previous night. After the repairs, the pipeline was recharged, creating additional pressure on another older 600-mm water main. This increased pressure is believed to have caused the older pipeline to leak due to the added stress, said an official. Meanwhile, water was supplied in some parts of Bandra West through Veravali reservoir.
