Virudhunagar (Tamil Nadu): Six people lost their lives, and many others were injured in a tragic explosion at a fireworks factory in Tamil Nadu’s Virudhunagar district on Saturday morning. Known as a hub for firecracker manufacturing, the district houses the majority of the state’s firework factories.

According to police reports, the death toll may increase as several injured individuals remain in critical condition. News agency IANS highlighted the severity of the incident, with rescue operations still ongoing. The fire department has successfully extinguished the flames and is working to recover those trapped in the debris.

While the exact cause of the explosion is yet to be determined, preliminary investigations suggest it may have been triggered by a power leakage or friction between explosive materials during the preparation of firecrackers.

TN CM MK Stalin Expresses Grief Over Incident

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin expressed his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh for each bereaved family. The incident has reignited concerns over safety measures in the region’s firecracker industry.

Virudhunagar has a history of such accidents, with 17 reported incidents last year alone, resulting in at least 54 fatalities. In September, Chief Minister Stalin visited the district, urging factory owners to prioritize safety protocols and prevent further tragedies.

The fireworks industry in Tamil Nadu employs approximately four lakh workers across 1,150 factories, with Sivakasi contributing 70% of India’s firecracker production. Despite its significant economic contribution, the industry has often been criticized for inadequate safety measures, leading to frequent accidents and loss of lives.
