Manipur violence: The National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) said that a delegation of Supreme Court Judge Justice BR Gavai and five other judges will visit the relief camps in Manipur affected by sexual violence on 22 March.

Nalsa said that Justice Gawai, who is also the acting president of Nalsa, along with Supreme Court Judge Justice Suryakant, Justice Vikram Nath, Justice MM Sundaresh, Justice KV Vishwanathan and Justice N. Kotishwar Singh will visit relief camps on the occasion of the biennial function of Manipur High Court.
More than 50,000 people were displaced.
Nalsa said in a statement issued on March 17, “Hundreds of people have been killed in the devastating communal violence that started on May 3, 2023 and more than 50,000 people have been displaced, many of which have taken refuge in relief camps in Manipur.”
Necessary relief materials will be distributed.
The statement further stated, “The visit of judges of the Supreme Court underlines the continuous need for legal and human assistance to the affected communities.” Nalsa said, ‘During this visit, Justice Gawai will inaugurate new legal aid clinics as well as legal service camps and medical camps across the state in Imphal East, Imphal West and Ukhul districts. During this time the necessary relief materials will be distributed to the internal displaced persons (IDPs).
The Congress welcomed this decision.
The Congress has welcomed the decision of the Supreme Court judges to visit relief camps in Manipur. Congress Communications General Secretary Jairam Ramesh recalled the Supreme Court’s August 2023 verdict in which he said, “The constitutional system in the northeastern state has completely collapsed.”
