Mira-Bhayandar: Exactly a month after the state government gave its approval for the creation of a new sub-Regional Transport Office (RTO) in the twin-city on the eve of Transport Day which is observed on 1, March, the facility in Kashimira was inaugurated by local legislator and transport minister- Pratap Sarnaik in the presence of municipal commissioner- Radhabinod A. Sharma and senior RTO officer- Shubhangi Patil on Wednesday (2 April).

The registration code of the RTO is MH:58 which will now be the new identity of vehicles in the twin-city. Taking into consideration the rising number of vehicles in the twin-city, Sarnaik had mooted the proposal and had been following up on the issue for the past several years.

Speaking on this occasion, Sarnaik said, “Earlier people living in the twin-city had to travel all the way to Thane for their vehicle and transport related work, this facility will save their time, energy and money.”

Apart from issuing driving/learners licenses, verifying insurances and pollution tests, the sub-RTO will play an important role of conducting vehicle fitness inspections, collecting road taxes and allocating registration numbers.

An interceptor vehicle equipped with cameras and speed gun/radars to capture photos of vehicles breaking traffic rules will be provided to officials. With the latest addition the number of sub-RTO’s in the state has increased to 58, this apart from 24 full fledged RTO’s.
