Mumbai: A 53-year-old man has fallen prey to scammers and lost Rs 67 lakh in shares investment fraud. According to the police, the complainant is a resident of Thane and works at a senior position in a private company in Thane.
About The Case
In December last year, the complainant while going through his social media account, came across an advertisement related to share investment. The said advertisement contained a link. The complainant clicked the said link after which his mobile number got added to a WhatsApp group where information regarding shares investment was being discussed.
In the said group, the members were posting information about the high returns that they had got by following the tips and instructions provided in the group by experts. The complainant also decided to invest through the said platform after which the scammers shared a bogus trading app link with him over WhatsApp and asked him to download the app on his phone. The complainant downloaded the app and registered on it.
Thereafter, from December 31 till January 18, the complainant transferred Rs 67.65 lakh in different beneficiary bank accounts provided by the scammers, in ten online transactions. The complainant could see huge profit on the trading app and initially, the complainant managed to withdraw Rs 20000 from the app in two transactions. However, later when the complainant tried to withdraw his earnings, his requests were denied.
When the complainant confronted the scammers, he was asked to pay more money as taxes, in order to withdraw his money. Since the complainant did not have more money to pay, he requested the scammer to return his money. When the complainant did not get his money, he realised that he had been duped. He then approached the police and got an offence registered in the matter on Wednesday.
