Justice BR Gawai took oath as CJI: Justice Bhushan Ramakrishna Gawai was sworn in as the 52nd Chief Justice (CJI) of India on Wednesday. From today, he will take over as the Chief Justice of India. BR Gavai took oath before President Draupadi Murmu as the Chief Justice of India.

The 51st Chief Justice of the country Sanjeev Khanna retired on Tuesday. The new Chief Justice will hold the post for the next six months. CJI BR Gavai is scheduled to retire on 23 November 2025. Justice Gawai became the second Dalit Chief Justice of India after Justice KG Balakrishnan in 2007.

Chief Justice of India BR Gawai became an additional judge of the Bombay High Court on 14 November 2003. He was later appointed as a permanent judge on 12 November 2005. He has led a variety of cases in Mumbai as well as Nagpur, Aurangabad and Panaji’s main bench. He became a judge of the Supreme Court on 24 May 2019. Justice Gawai has given several remarkable decisions as a judge of the Supreme Court. This includes the Modi government’s decision of demonetisation in 2016 and the decision to declare the election bond scheme unconstitutional.
