Mumbai: A five-year-old son of a homeless labourer couple was rescued within 24 hours of being kidnapped, said the Borivali railway police, adding that they have arrested the complainant’s acquaintance for the crime.

According to the officials, the couple, who lives under the Goregaon railway bridge, recently met the accused, Karan Kanojia, 24, who is also a labourer and resides at the same spot.

The alleged kidnapping took place on February 11 around 6pm when the minor Shyam Gupta alias Ali Mohammad Ajaz Ansari was with his mother under the bridge. Kanojiaapproached them and allegedly kidnapped the child when the woman got busy with work.

After a frantic search, she filed a complaint against the accused with the railway police. A probe was launched under the supervision of senior inspector Dattaji Khuperkar.

Subsequently, the officials received a tip-off that Kanojia was in Kalyan. Next day, they laid a trap and succeeded in apprehending the accused and rescuing the minor. The duo was brought to the Borivali railway police station, after which the boy was then handed over to his parents.

A police officer said, “There are no prior cases against Kanojia and the motive behind the kidnapping is also not clear. He has been sent to judicial custody.”
