Mumbai: A 39-year-old woman lost Rs 92.9 lakh in almost a month’s span after falling prey to shares trading scam, according to police. The scammers trapped her with the promise of providing 5%-200% profits on investment. Also, she could see her ‘earnings’ of Rs 5.25 crore on a bogus trading app.
About The Case
According to the police, the complainant is a resident of Kharghar and her husband works in a private company in Mumbai. On September 25, while going through her Instagram account, she came across an advertisement link related to online shares trading, which promised huge profits. The woman clicked on the link after which her phone number got added in a WhatsApp group wherein information about buying and selling of shares was being shared.
On October 1, the scammers shared a web link with the complainant and a bogus trading app got downloaded on her phone upon clicking the link, said the police. From October 1 to December 5, the woman paid Rs 92.9 lakh in 41 online transactions on the instructions of the scammers. When she asked the frauds to release her earnings, they sought more money on the pretext of taxes, making her realise the fraud.
