Mumbai: A 38-year-old pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run accident in Bandra West on Sunday evening. The deceased, identified as Tuntun Shah, was walking northbound near the Worli-Bandra Sea Link toll plaza when an unidentified vehicle struck him from behind, resulting in his death.

Police found a mobile phone and an L&T identity card in the deceased’s shirt pocket. Based on CCTV footage, the Bandra police identified the vehicle as a truck and discovered that the driver had fled the scene. The driver, later identified as Sohail Khan, 30, was arrested.

According to police, the investigation revealed that Shah, a carpenter from Uttar Pradesh, was employed by a multinational company. The truck driver fled the scene fearing public outrage and drove directly to the coastal road construction site where he is employed. The accident occurred while Shah was crossing the road, when the truck struck him.

According to the FIR, at around 7:02 p.m. on May 11, the Bandra police received information about an accident near the toll plaza. Upon arrival, officers found a man lying in the middle of the road in front of a bus stop on the northbound side. His head was severely injured, and he was bleeding from the nose and ears. There were visible abrasions on his chest and stomach, indicating a high-impact collision.

The victim was transported by ambulance to Bhabha Hospital in Bandra West, where he was declared dead at 7:35 p.m. The mobile phone recovered from his shirt pocket and the identity card found in the phone cover confirmed his identity as Tuntun Shah, 38, an L&T employee.

Later that day, the police registered a case against the then-unidentified driver under sections 106 (causing death by negligence) and 281 (rash driving or riding on a public way) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with relevant provisions of the Information Technology Act.
