Girgaum Cyber Fraud: Woman loses ₹19.26 lakh to scammers posing as officials; case under investigation | Representative Image

Mumbai: A 38-year-old woman from Girgaum has lodged a complaint with the South Region Cyber Police Station, alleging a fraud amounting to Rs 19,26. The case, registered under sections 308(6), 318(4), 319(2), 61(2) Of BNS Act and along with sections 66(C) and 66(D) of the Information Technology Act, is currently under investigation, Said Police.

This digital arrest incident occurred Between October 27 and October and Complaint Filed on November 11. The complainant’s residence in Girgaum and works with private company. The complainant reported that receiving a call from the unknown mobile number during the incident period. The caller claimed to be from Delhi Customs.

Subsequently, another individual using the another mobile number posed as a Mumbai Police Crime Branch officer. These individuals repeatedly contacted the complainant and used fake letters, allegedly from the CBI, Chief Judicial Magistrate, and Delhi Customs, to intimidate her.

According to Police information, The complainant was falsely accused of being linked to 16 passports, 58 ATM cards, and 140 grams of MDMA drugs, allegedly ordered using her Aadhaar number. The fraudsters claimed they needed to verify her bank account to investigate the matter. Under this pretext, they coerced her into transferring Rs 19,26,876 into specified bank accounts.

The case is being investigated by South region cyber police station, but no arrests have been made yet. Neither the fraudulent amount nor the assets have been recovered at this stage, Said Police.

“Based on the complaint, we have registered the case and are identifying the users of the mentioned mobile numbers and the beneficiaries of the fraudulent transactions. Further investigation is ongoing”, Said Police officer. Citizens are urged to exercise caution against similar scams and report any suspicious activities to the police immediately.
