Thane: A 37-year-old woman died in Rukhmani Bai Hospital in Kalyan due to not receiving an ambulance on time. The deceased has been identified as Savita Govind Virajdar (37), who resided in the Kolsewadi area in Vithalwadi of Kalyan. She is survived by two children, while her husband has passed away.

She had been complaining of hand weakness two days ago and was rushed to Rukhmani Bai Hospital for treatment on Monday at 12 PM, but the doctor referred her to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa for further treatment.

Family members alleged that the ambulance did not arrive on time despite waiting for four hours. However, the ambulance could not arrive promptly, which led to her death in the hospital. The family alleged that due to the negligence of the hospital, Savita died because of the delay in receiving timely treatment.

Deepa Shukla, the health officer of Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation, said, “She was complaining of weakness in her left hand. Our doctors suggested that she seek a neurological opinion for treatment and refer her to Kalwa Hospital. She was finally shifted to an ambulance, but in meantime her health deteriorated. Following this, she was promptly taken back to the Rukhmani Bai hospital, where she died during treatment. The Deputy Commissioner of the health department ordered the initiation of inquiries regarding this, and a report should be submitted within 48 hours.”

Dr. Sandeep Pagare, chief medical officer from Rukhmani Bai Hospital, said, “Savita Birajdar, who came to the hospital complaining, was physically examined by our staff. We found that she had symptoms of a stroke and needed to be in the ICU and further treatment. Therefore, we suggested she be transferred to Kalwa Hospital. Two children dialed the 108 number for an ambulance, but it was not available in time. Thereafter, they were confused about how to seek an ambulance from the hospital. Due to the delay, she died. A departmental inquiry will be initiated to determine the exact reason behind this.”
