A tragic stampede occurred during the special screening of Pushpa 2 at Sandhya Theatre, RTC Crossroads, Hyderabad, on Wednesday night. Actor Allu Arjun’s appearance at the event attracted massive crowds, leading to chaos. The main gate of the theatre collapsed as fans rushed to catch a glimpse of the star, triggering a stampede.

In the incident, a 35-year-old woman, Revathi, and her child were caught in the crowd and fainted. Revathi tragically passed away due to asphyxiation, a condition caused by a lack of oxygen, while her child remains in critical condition.

Following the incident, Allu Arjun was arrested today (December 13) and is now in judicial custody for 14 days. The tragedy has raised concerns over crowd management and safety measures during high-profile events. While the case has become the talk of the nation, the critical asphyxiation condition is also taking centre stage. Keep reading as we understand everything about this condition.

What is asphyxiation?

Asphyxiation happens when the body doesn’t get enough oxygen to function properly, leading to serious health issues or even death. It’s often caused by blocked airways or situations where oxygen is limited. According to Healthline, “Asphyxia refers to the condition of oxygen deprivation, while asphyxiated means a person has died due to oxygen deprivation.”

Causes of asphyxiation:

Choking: Blockage of the airway by food, objects, or fluids.

Strangulation: External pressure on the neck restricting airflow.

Suffocation: Lack of oxygen in the environment (e.g., enclosed spaces).

Medical Conditions: Severe asthma or allergic reactions causing airway swelling.

Symptoms of asphyxiation:

Difficulty breathing or gasping for air.

Bluish tint on skin, lips, or nails.

Weakness, confusion, or unconsciousness.

Chest pain or panic-like feelings.

Death risk

If untreated, asphyxiation can lead to brain damage within minutes and death soon after due to oxygen deprivation. Immediate help, such as CPR or clearing the airway, is critical in such emergencies.
