Mira-Bhayandar: The anti-narcotics cell (ANC) attached to the Mira Bhayandar-Vasai Virar (MBVV) police have arrested a 34-year-old man after he was found in possession of heroin drugs worth more than Rs.16 lakh in Mira Road on Thursday night.

Notably, the accused who has been identified as-Tanveer Ashfaq Shaikh (34) ran a readymade garment shop in a reputed shopping mall in Mira Road as a front to mask his shady drug peddling activities.

Acting on a specific tip-off provided by informers, the ANC led by police inspector-Amar Marathe laid a trap at the parking lot behind Rassaz Multiplex and Shopping Mall in the Naya Nagar area of Mira Road.

Personnel from the ANC took Shaikh into custody as he arrived there at around 9 pm on Thursday (12 December). Upon frisking he was found to be in possession of 25 grams of heroin-a highly addictive drug made from morphine.

The value of the contraband is pegged at more than Rs.16 lakh in the international market. A resident of Abdullah Tower in the Naya Nagar area of Mira Road, the accused peddled drugs to maintain a flashy lifestyle.

An offence under the relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 has been registered at the Naya Nagar police station against the accused who was remanded to custody after he was produced in court on Friday. Investigations were on to ascertain the source of drugs and potential buyers.
