Thane Traffic Police booked 314 for drunk driving on New Year’s Eve, contributing to over 3,800 cases in 2024 | Representative Image
Thane: The Thane Traffic Police booked 314 people who were driving their vehicles under the influence of alcohol across the Thane Commissionerate on December 31 (New Year’s Eve).
A total of 3,840 drunk driving cases have been reported from January 1 to December 31, 2024. In the year 2022, a total of 2,333 drink and drive cases were lodged across the Thane Commissionerate. In the year 2023, a total of 2,462 drink and drive cases were lodged.
The police sources said that a total of 16 cases of drunk driving were registered at Thane Nagar, 11 at Naupada, 16 at Kalwa, 23 at Mumbra, 6 at Kopari, 17 at Wagale, 14 at Kapurbawadi, 17 at Kasarwadavli, 12 at Bhiwandi, 27 at Narpoli, 21 at Kongaon, 26 at Kalyan, 19 at Dombivli, 25 at Kolsewadi, 17 at Vithalwadi, 22 at Ulhasnagar, and 22 at Ambernath.
Moreover, the police booked about 63 violators for riding pillion on motorcycles and drove by rider under the influence of alcohol. A case was registered under Section 188 (Punishment for Abetment).
Deputy Commissioner of Police, Pankaj Shirsat from Thane Traffic Police said, “We have started an awareness campaign regarding traffic norms. We appealed to the people not to drink and drive and to drive safely on the road. We have deployed 35 police units and 17 traffic units. A total of 1,326 drink and drive cases have been reported in the month of December 2024.”
