Mumbai: A man has been arrested by the Byculla police for barging into a businessman’s house in the Mazgaon Garden area on Monday evening and demanding gold, valuables and mobile phones by holding his 14-year-old daughter hostage with a toy gun. The accused, the caregiver for an elderly person in the same building, wore a burqa to carry out the robbery.

The businessman Umar Shamsi resides with his family on the 10th floor of Jasmine Apartments. The accused, Taurikul Shaudul Dalal, 30, is the caregiver for an elderly person on the 11th floor of the same building.

Shamsi’s wife Sumera initially thought someone was playing a prank. However, she was alarmed when she heard a man’s voice behind the burqa. She distracted him and told him that the valuables were in the other room, and then snatched the gun from his hand to rescue her daughter.

The accused then claimed he had a bomb, prompting Sumera to scream and summon the neighbours, who caught him and removed his burqa, discovering that he was the caretaker from the 11th floor. Sumera then contacted the police control room.

The police said Dalal hatched the plan as he was facing extreme financial difficulties. A case has been registered under sections 308(8) (extortion), 333 (unlawful entry), and 351(3) (criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The accused, a resident of Ghodapdeo, is being interrogated further.
