Amritsar: Three more accused have been reportedly arrested for supplying weapons in connection with an alleged attack at the Golden Temple in Amritsar, Punjab, where an unidentified man armed with an iron rod injured five people on Friday, March 14.
Among the injured, a Sikh youth from Bathinda remains in critical condition and is receiving treatment at the emergency wing of Sri Guru Ram Das Institute of Medical Sciences & Research in Vallah. Two of the injured are sewadars (attendants) of the Golden Temple, while the other three devotees are from Mohali, Bathinda, and Patiala, police said.
The police have arrested the main attacker, his aide, and three others accused of providing weapons. The attack occurred inside the historic Guru Ram Das inn near the community kitchen around noon, as Sikh devotees had gathered to pay obeisance at Sachkhand Sri Harmandar Sahib on the occasion of the new Nanakshahi year.
A police officer stated that one of the accused had conducted a reconnaissance of the site before the attack. The Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC), which manages the Golden Temple, has strongly condemned the incident, calling it part of a larger conspiracy.
The SGPC stated that the assailant launched the attack on devotees without warning, using an iron rod.
SGPC secretary Partap Singh urged the police to take strict action, reveal the identities of the accused, and conduct a thorough investigation. He emphasised that all injured individuals are receiving full medical care at the SGPC-run Sri Guru Ramdas Hospital.
Singh credited the SGPC’s swift response and CCTV surveillance within the Sri Darbar Sahib complex for the quick apprehension of the attackers. He warned that such incidents are deliberate attempts to disrupt peace at Sachkhand Sri Harmandar Sahib and create fear among Sikh devotees worldwide.
