Vasai Tragedy: 27-Year-Old Man Dies After Inhaling Carbon Monoxide; Probe Ongoing | Representational Image
Palghar, Maharashtra: A 27-year-old man in Vasai was found dead Wednesday evening after taking his own life by inhaling carbon monoxide from a cylinder, in what police are calling a highly unusual suicide. The deceased, identified as Shrey Agarwal, was discovered in his rented bungalow in the Kaman area, with his body secured to the cylinder.
Agarwal, who had been living in the Cluster 09 bungalow at Spanish Villa in Vasai East for the past year, was found after his sister filed a missing person report with the Mumbai Police Commissioner when she was unable to contact him for two days. The Mumbai Crime Branch traced his mobile phone location to Kaman and alerted the Naigaon Police.
Upon arriving at the bungalow, officers found the premises sealed and detected a strong, foul odor. A warning note, written in English, was posted on the door, cautioning that the house was filled with carbon monoxide and that turning on any lights could cause an explosion. “Carbon monoxide inside… don’t switch on lights,” the note read.
Recognizing the potential danger, Naigaon Police immediately called the fire brigade. Firefighters, equipped with personal protective equipment (PPE) and breathing apparatus, forced entry into the bedroom using a hydraulic spreader cutter. What they found inside was a meticulously planned suicide.
Agarwal had rigged two carbon monoxide cylinders, attaching them to his arms and wearing a helmet. A tube connected to the cylinder was fitted with a nebulizer, which he used to inhale the deadly gas. Firefighters carefully disconnected the tube from his mouth and separated it from the cylinders. Agarwal’s body was visibly swollen.
The deliberate nature of Agarwal’s actions, including sealing the bungalow and posting a warning, suggests a calculated intent to end his life,” a police spokesperson stated.
“The suicide note indicates that his decision was driven by the unbearable burden of his untreatable illness.” He further added that the note, now a key piece of evidence, is being examined by investigators to gain a deeper understanding of Agarwal’s mental state and the specific nature of his illness.
The Naigaon Police have sent the note and body for a post-mortem examination. The incident has left local residents shocked and puzzled by the unusual method of suicide. Investigations are ongoing.
