Mumbai: In a shocking twist to the Wadala sex racket and blackmail case wherein women were lured with false pretences to lodges, photographed and blackmailed, the friend of the key accused has died by suicide.

The victim, Tanmay Keni, 27, a resident of Pratiksha Nagar, was missing for the past 10 days. His body, with his wrist slit, was found near Chheda petrol pump in Mulund with a suicide note, blaming the arrested accused, Sachin Karanje, 25, for using his Aadhaar card to carry out the abhorrent acts. Karanje has now been booked for abetment of suicide.

The suicide note found near Keni’s body blamed Karanje for the drastic step. In the note, Keni alleged that his friend deceived him and was blackmailing him. It read, “I am ending my life because of the harassment caused by Sachin. He deserves to be punished. Sorry, Mom and Dad.”

As per the police, Karanje was using his friend Keni’s Aadhaar card to book lodges where women were allegedly called with false job offers, sedated, photographed inappropriately and later blackmailed. After Karanje’s arrest, the police summoned Keni for questioning on December 17.

However, he escaped during enquiry and remained missing for 10 days. He was found with his wrist slit on December 26 in Mulund. He was rushed to a hospital but doctors pronounced him dead.

As per the police, Karanje and an accomplice reportedly exploited multiple women in this manner. The matter came to light when one of the victims filed a complaint at the Wadala TT police station. Following the complaint, the police detained Karanje and initiated an investigation into the case.

The cases have been registered at both Wadala TT and Mulund police stations. The police are investigating the allegations in the suicide note and the broader sex racket linked to Karanje.
