Navi Mumbai: A total of 266 people were booked by Navi Mumbai police on the night of December 31 for drunk driving. Additionally, action was also taken against 2,357 vehicle drivers for violating traffic rules.

On the occasion of New Year’s Eve, the Navi Mumbai Police had deployed bandobast at various checkpoints were set up at toll booths on highways, major intersections, signals, and junctions in the city.

“For the 31st, we had, a special “Drink and Drive” campaign, conducted by 16 units of the Navi Mumbai Traffic Department in their respective jurisdictions. The maximum number of offenders were caught at Vashi. Going ahead, we continue with the similar actions frequently,” deputy commissioner of police (traffic) Tirupati Kakde, said.

While Vashi unit caught 24 offenders, 15 by APMC unit, 20 was caught by Rabale, 13 by MAhape unit, 17 by Koparkhairane unit, 32 by Turbhe unit, 13 by Seawood unit, 17 by CBD, 14 by Kharghar, 20 by Kalamboli, 16 by Taloja unit, 22 by Panvel City unit, 10 by New Panvel unit, 13 by Uran, 15 by Nhava Sheva and five by Gavanphata unit.

Besides, Zone I of Navi Mumbai police too had booked people under various offences to ensure that there was peace being maintained in the city. Nine people were n=booked under Narcotic Drugs Psychotropic Substances Act for consumption of drugs.

Other 33 persons were booked for consuming alcohol in public places and other 33 were booked under Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (COPTA- Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution Act, 2003).

The officials also booked five orchestra bars, seven service bars and six hookah parlours found for violating various rules.
