Sudanese student stabbed to death in Phagwara while defending female students; 6 accused arrested | Representative Image
Chandigarh: A 25-year-old Sudanese student was stabbed to death and another grievously hurt while defending female students from harassment by a group of boys near a private university in Phagwara town of Punjab’s Kapurthala district, on Thursday.
Stating that the incident took place early in the morning in the Green Valley locality near Law Gate in Maheru village, police said that all the six accused in the case, also said to be the students of the same private university, have been arrested after tracking them down in Himachal Pradesh. Maheru village is a residential hub of international students, especially from African countries.
Police said that an FIR had been registered on the basis of complaint lodged by injured student Ahmed Mohamad Nour Ahmed Hussen who said that the incident occurred when he and Mohammad Wada Bala Yousuf Ahmed, who was stabbed to death, were returning from morning prayers (namaz), accompanied by two Sudanese female students when they were stopped by a group of youths.
The complainant said that the accused, who were drunk, started harassing the female students demanding their mobile phone numbers. When he and his friend intervened and tried to defend the female students from harassment by the accused, the accused stabbed both of them in the chest and fled the spot.
A local resident Prabhat Dubey rushed the victims to the Johal hospital in Jalandhar Cantt, where the doctors declared Mohammad Wada Bala Yousuf Ahmed, brought dead.
Police said a case under various sections including murder and attempt murder had been registered against the accused identified as Abdul Ahadh from Karnataka, Amar Partap Singh, Aditya Garg, Mohammad Shoib, Sushank and Yashvardhan Rajput, all said to be natives of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, currently living in Phagwara’s paying guest accommodations.
The accused were nabbed from Mandi in Himachal Pradesh. Meanwhile, the incident has triggered fear and anguish among the African students in Phagwara who sought enhanced security and safety in the area which is in close proximity of the private university.
