Thane: A 24-year-old man who was addicted to playing an online game decided to take the shortcut way to earn money and was arrested for allegedly stealing a bag containing 111.420 grams of gold worth Rs 7,07,000 from the train. The accused has been identified as Yogesh Niwas Chavan, 24, a labour, unmarried, and a resident of Satara.

On December 6, the passenger identified as Rahul Soni, along with his family members, boarded the Siddheshwar Express from Solapur to Kalyan Railway Station. Rahul’s mother kept her bag and purse beneath the seat. An unidentified person was allegedly stealing a purse from Madhava Railway Station to Kalyan Railway Station.

Police said that complainant Rahul Soni found that a purse was missing from their respective seat in Kalyan when he woke up. Following this, he approached the Kalyan railway police and lodged a case against the unidentified person. A case was lodged under sections 305(C) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

The railway police said that they were reviewing the CCTV footage from Madha railway station to Kalyan railway station to solve the case. Based on technical intelligence, they arrested the accused on January 20. A team was led by Rohit Sawant, senior police inspector of the local crime branch unit of Kalyan railway police.

During the interrogation, it was learned that he revealed he was addicted to playing an online game. He sold gold ornaments to get money, which he invested in the online game, but later he was defeated in it.

Prakash Chougule, police sub-inspector from the Local Crime Branch, Kalyan Railway Police, said, “During the preliminary investigation, it was learned that Chavan was in the habit of playing online games. He lost money while playing an online game. Thereafter, he decided to choose the shortcut way to earn money. He boarded the train from Pune railway station and took away the purse while passenger Soni and his family were sleeping on the train. We have recovered the gold ornaments from the possession of the jewelry shop, from which Chavan sold them.We arrested him and produced him in court.”
