Pakistani officials have released 22 Indian fishermen from Malir Jail in Karachi. It is likely that he will be handed over to India on the Wagah border on Saturday.

Released from jail on completion of sentence

According to Malir Jail Superintendent Arshad Shah, fishermen were released on Friday after their sentence was completed. Faisal Idi, president of the humanitarian organization Edi Foundation, arranged for his visit to Lahore, from where he will move forward to return to India.

Appeal for pain and release of families

Faisal Idi, highlighting the difficulties of fishermen’s families, emphasized the need for their early release and return. Pakistan officials bring Indian fishermen to the Wagah border, where Indian officials ensure their return after completing the formalities.

Arrest due to border violation

Often fishermen cross the sea boundaries and accidentally move to another country’s water area, which makes them arrest the Navy of both countries.

On January 1, the list of prisoners was exchanged between India and Pakistan, which stated that:

  • There are 266 Indian prisoners in Pakistan jails, including 217 fishermen.
  • There are 462 Pakistani prisoners in India’s jails, including 81 fishermen.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister sought help from Center

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin demanded the central government to take effective diplomatic steps to free Indian fishermen imprisoned in Sri Lanka.

He gave Foreign Minister Dr. S.K. Writing a letter to Jaishankar, requested to take concrete diplomatic measures to ensure immediate release of the arrested fishermen and their boats in Sri Lanka and call a meeting of the Joint Working Group (JWG).
