The Mumbra Police arrested a 20-year-old man for allegedly raping and stabbing to death a ten-year-old girl. He intended to dispose of her body by throwing her from his bathroom into the building’s ventilation duct in Mumbra on Monday night. The accused has been identified as Asif Mansoori (20), a laborer originally from Bihar, who lived with his parents.
The police said the incident came to light after residents heard a loud noise from a window duct on Monday at 11 PM. A few residents rushed to the spot and found a child lying unconscious at the base of the ventilation shaft.
According to the police, residents checked the duct after hearing a loud thud. They opened the windows using a torch and found the girl’s body partially clothed. They immediately informed the local police, who rushed to the spot and alerted the fire brigade. Firefighter Ganesh Khatade, along with his team, retrieved the body from the duct. She was taken to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival. Initially, an Accidental Death Report was filed.
Senior Police Inspector Anil Shinde from Mumbra Police Station said, “We formed a team and reached the spot to investigate. Our team questioned the children and residents of the building. The victim was playing with a girl who told the police about the accused, who had lured her by promising a toy. Based on suspicion, we questioned Asif and entered his room, where we found a piece of the victim’s clothing in the bathroom window grill. He was detained. During the investigation, we learned that he lured the victim with the promise of a toy, took her to his room, raped her, stabbed her neck with a sharp weapon, and threw her from the sixth floor into the duct.”
The police said the post-mortem was conducted by doctors. The provisional report indicated she died due to hemorrhage and shock from a stab injury to the neck, damaging vital structures, with evidence of sexual assault.
An FIR has been registered against Asif Mansoori under sections 103(1), 96, 137(2), 64, 65(2), 64(I), and 238 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, along with relevant sections 4, 6, 8, and 12 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO).
