Mumbai: A gold artisan lost his life after a heavy machine fell on his head in Zaveri Bazaar on Sunday night. The Lokmanya Tilak Marg Police have registered a case of negligence causing death against the factory owner and four others and are investigating the matter. No one arrest in this case, Said Police.
The deceased, identified as Anupam Ghosh (18), and the complainant Soumya Roy (23), both residents of West Bengal, were working at a gold-processing factory owned by Mansoor Ali Sheikh (49) in Zaveri Bazaar’s Telgalli area. The factory used a 250-kg wire-cutting machine provided by a company named Sunlight Agri India. The machine was kept in the center of the factory premises.
The factory employed eight artisans, all hailing from West Bengal. They would stay and sleep within the factory premises after work. On Sunday, the factory was closed, and as usual, the workers had their dinner and went to sleep. Roy and Anupam Ghosh were sleeping on one side of the machine, while Mangala Mandal and Swarup Ghosh were sleeping on the other.
Late at night, around 10:45 PM, Mandal and Swarup began playfully teasing each other while lying on their beds. During their antics, their legs accidentally hit the wire-cutting machine, causing it to topple onto Roy and Anupam Ghosh. The heavy machine struck their heads, severely injuring both.
The incident caused panic among the other workers, who immediately lifted the machine off the victims and rushed them to G.T. Hospital for medical assistance. Unfortunately, doctors declared Anupam Ghosh dead during treatment. Roy sustained injuries but is currently stable.
Upon receiving information about the incident, Lokmanya Tilak Marg Police reached the factory and sent Anupam’s body for post-mortem examination.
Based on Roy’s complaint, the police registered a case against factory owner Mansoor Ali Sheikh, workers Mangala Mandal and Swarup Ghosh, as well as house owners Uttam Majhi and Ajit Chedda, under relevant sections of the IPC for causing death due to negligence. Further investigations are underway.
