Festivals have special significance in India, and these festivals often have holidays in schools, colleges and government offices. Today, on 18 April 2025, a holiday has been declared in many states of the country on the occasion of Good Friday.
Which states have holidays?
Schools and government offices in lower states are closed due to good Friday:
- Delhi: All schools, colleges and government institutions are closed.
- Uttar Pradesh: There is a holiday in government and most private schools in the state.
- Uttarakhand: Government schools and offices are closed.
- Madhya Pradesh: State level holiday has been declared.
- Bihar, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh: All government offices and schools in these states are also closed.
Bank and stock market status
The stock markets will be completely closed today due to Good Friday. There will be no business in the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE).
In the case of banks, different states may have different rules. Therefore, customers are advised to see the official bank holiday list of their state.
Dry Day in Delhi
The Delhi government has declared dry day on the day of Good Friday, under which the sale of liquor will be completely closed. The Delhi Excise Department has issued this order under Rule 52 of the year 2010.
Apart from this, there will be dry day in Delhi on the occasion of Buddha Purnima (May 12) and Eid-ul-Juha (6 June).
Why is Good Friday celebrated?
Good Friday is an important day of Christianity. On this day, Lord Jesus Christ was crucified. It is celebrated as a symbol of their sacrifice, forgiveness and compassion. This day is also known as ‘Black Friday’.
