Though the incident occurred late on Friday night last, action was taken against the police personnel on Monday after senior army officers intervened and there was a public outrage over the incident.

Police said that 12 police personnel including three inspectors have been suspended and a departmental inquiry has been ordered against them. The three inspectors have been identified as Harry Boparai, Ronnie Singh and Harjinder Dhillon.

According to information, Col Pushpinder Bath, who is posted in New Delhi, who was admitted in Military Hospital in Patiala, was assaulted by police personnel – who were in civilian dress – was hit in the face and his left arm was broken, outside a “dhaba” near Rajinder Hospital late on Friday night.

The wife of the army officer told newspersons that her husband and son who were standing outside their car and having food were asked by a group of policemen who asked them to move their car away so that they could park their vehicle there. However, when Col Bath objected to their language, they brutally beat up him and their son, she said and added that while the police initially refused to register a case, a public outrage followed after the CCTV footage of the incident went viral on social media and senior army officers condemned the incident demanding immediate action against the accused cops.
