The Thane Police have suspended eleven policemen, including a police sub-inspector, for allegedly neglecting their duties and allowing security lapses in court. The suspensions are related to two separate incidents at the Kalyan court on December 21: one in which a murder accused hurled a slipper at an additional sessions judge, and another where a man was found carrying a gun while roaming the court premises.
The suspended personnel include eight policemen from the Thane police who were responsible for escorting the accused from jail to court and three others who were assigned security duty at the court premises.
In the first incident, a 25-year-old murder accused, Kiran Bharam, allegedly threw a slipper at an additional sessions judge on December 21. Bharam, who was arrested in 2020, became agitated when the judge announced the next hearing date. He bent down, removed his slipper, and hurled it at the judge. He was subsequently escorted out of the courtroom by the police. A fresh case has been filed against him under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
In the second incident, the private security guard of an accused person was spotted carrying a gun and roaming around the court premises. A video of the incident, recorded by someone present, went viral on social media. The Mahatma Phule Police have registered a case against the security guard, identified as Narayan Mishra, under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Sanjay Jadhav, Additional Commissioner of Police, Kalyan, confirmed the suspension of 11 police personnel, including a police sub-inspector, citing their lack of vigilance and the resulting security lapses.
