The report of the Parliamentary Committee headed by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said that according to data received from the Ministry of External Affairs, all foreign prisoners imprisoned in India are also sent back to their respective countries. Accordingly, a total of 31 convicted persons (TSPs) have been transferred. This includes Australia, Bangladesh, Brazil, Egypt, Hong Kong, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Britain, UAE etc.
In 2023, three of the Indian prisoners brought back to India were brought from Iran, one from Cambodia and one from Britain. Two Indians have been brought back from Britain this year, while a prisoner has been brought back from Russia. Despite bilateral agreements to send back their prisoners with other countries, Indians have very low repatriation rates. Currently, more than ten thousand Indians, including under consideration prisoners, are imprisoned in abroad jails.
According to the data released by the government in February this year, out of these ten thousand Indians, 2633 are imprisoned in Saudi Arabia, while UAE is second with 2518. Apart from this, 1317 Indians are also imprisoned in Nepal.
