Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): Under the Pradhan Mantri SurakshitMatritva Abhiyan, which aims to provide free and quality antenatal care, around 1.75 lakh pregnant women in Madhya Pradesh have been identified as high-risk pregnancies over the past six months.
The screening and check-ups conducted as part of the initiative also revealed that women from both urban and rural areas were equally affected by anaemia.
A total of 6.5 lakh women were screened across the state under the programme, which is run by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW).
The initiative, which takes place on the 9th of every month, aims to ensure comprehensive and free antenatal care for all pregnant women. Officials from the National Health Mission (NHM) said that anaemia was identified as a common issue, with many women showing low haemoglobin levels.
The programme provides iron supplements, including iron tablets and FCM injections, to help improve haemoglobin levels. It also promotes a diet rich in proteins and iron, including foods like black gram, dates and green vegetables.
In addition to anaemia, around 6-7% of pregnant women were found to be suffering from gestational diabetes.
Talking to Free Press, NHM Director Saloni Sadana emphasized the importance of regular check-ups, particularly for measuring haemoglobin levels, and ensuring proper care for women with conditions like sickle cell anaemia to maintain optimal health during pregnancy. The initiative is a part of the ongoing efforts to reduce maternal mortality and improve overall maternal health in the state.
